Icons, Symbols, Pictograms

The workshop will present the foundations for the design of symbols, icons and pictograms, offering participants the relevant knowledge, design methodology, and methods of use.

We will refer to important examples of symbols, discuss their structure and design, and analyze how and where they are used.

Participants will be called upon to design one or more series of symbols, going through the basic stages of researching, studying the goal, making initial sketches by hand, and finally designing on the computer.

During the workshop we will analyze and select the thematic areas on which we will focus. This may be, e.g., website icons, pictograms for sports events, symbols for area signage, etc.

  • Laptop with Illustrator installed (preferably CS or later version)
  • Plain sketching pad, mechanical pencil, eraser

Necessary Requirement: Participants must be students or graduates of graphic design schools
